I feel so lucky to have been able to capture this series of images. Back in the spring, I was approached by my friend Donna to do them. She is an artist (a painter) and is working on getting ready for her first solo show in September. She had had a series of visions that she wanted to paint and needed to have some photographs to draw from.
As she told me what she wanted, I immediately thought of another friend, Blaine. Blaine is also an artist and she has a beautiful horse. I knew that she could help us pull off the shoot. It turns out, she was exactly the person we needed to make this day happen.
As soon as we got to the location, Donna excitedly told me that it looked just like it had in her vision. She had described a dress made of white butterflies to me on the way, and sure enough, the field was full of tiny white butterflies when we arrived. I had never seen a butterfly like those before.
Donna wanted to paint the horse coming out of the canvas, so we had Blaine ride her horse straight toward me a couple of times to get these type of shots. (Which was pretty scary, by the way!) Blaine was thrilled with the way her horse cooperated and even mentioned that its whole demeanor was much more calm that day than usual.
For the series of images of Blaine running, Donna told her to pretend she was running to Jesus. We all got pretty emotional at that point.
Overall, this was such a beautiful experience for me. Everything went perfectly. I approached the day a little differently than I would for other clients. I took more risks like shooting right at the sun and not worrying if the subject was in perfect focus. It was a really fun and freeing experience for me! I hope you enjoy.
